Where are our religious clubs?

The experiences that are introduced to you in college include being a part of student activities and clubs that are available on campus. Here at Everett Community College, there are many clubs that cover a wide variety of racial, cultural, and class related organizations. One of the few types that fall within a smaller spectrum are religious clubs. The only club relating to religion that is listed on the Student Activity Guide club listings is Campus Crusade for Christ. This particular club provides a place for students of Christian faith to come together in order to discuss issues and develop leadership skills. Student Heather Logan said that "It's weird that we only have one religious club" when we have such a diverse group of people attending our school. "We should have more diverse clubs to allow different kinds of people to be involved in the school activities," said Logan when she heard about the limited opportunities for religious groups on campus. ?

There are many different religions represented at Edmonds community college including Buddhism, Islam and Christianity. At Western Washington University and the University of Washington there are massive amounts of groups available to the students that attend those schools. Western Washington academic facilities seem to be places of religious tolerance yet on our campus in Everett, there is nothing to prove that. ?

So why aren't there more religious clubs in action at Everett community? Student J.V. Estella offers the explanation that maybe smaller religious groups are less confident in standing for their religion due to chances of discrimination. ?

Another explanation has to do with the fact that knowledge pertaining to starting a club is somewhat difficult to come by unless you know where to go or have enough enthusiasm to find out where to go. You only need 10 students to start a club and the Student Activity Center in the Parks building is where you can find the form and the information to succeed in the formation. Now all we need is the drive and pride in our own religions to get together and support each other. If you would like to help make our campus more diversity-friendly, get some friends together and visit the Student Activity Center.
