"Slumdog Millionaire" swept the Academy Awards last Sunday night, winning eight out of its 10 Oscar nominations.
Along with receiving an award for best picture and best director (Danny Boyle), Slumdog also won for best adapted screenplay, best film editing, best cinematography, best sound, best original score and best original song, "Jai Ho."
As with "Enchanted" last year, the film was nominated multiple times in the same category. "O, Saya" was the second best original song nominee from "Slumdog," although M.I.A. was not available on Oscar night to perform her portion of the song.
Slumdog was also nominated in the category of best sound editing, but "The Dark Knight" snagged that win.
"Benjamin Button," though had the most nominations of the night with 13, but only took home a disappointing three awards: best art direction, best makeup and best visual effects.
Perhaps the most surprising and controversial winner of the night was Sean Penn, who achieved an Oscar for best performance by an actor in a leading role. He has been honored for his role in "Milk" as Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician to be elected to office in California.
The nomination, win and the acceptance speech sparked both support and disapproval. Protesters rallied during the red carpet at the beginning of the ceremony and blog pages exploded with comments from both sides immediately after Penn was announced the winner.
"You commie, homo-loving, sons a guns," Penn joked at the start of his speech. "I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way of support. We've got to have equal rights for everyone."
