The senate approved spending from the E-Tech budget for an additional digital sign on top of the five that have already been ordered on the Feb. 27 senate meeting.
On May 30, 2008, the ASB senate approved spending $25,000 to order five digital signs that will be placed in campus buildings and inform students about campus events. During the last meeting on Feb. 27 they approved an additional $1200 for a sixth digital sign.
The signs will also take $7400 each year from the E-Tech budget for maintenance and upgrades, said Margery Wyatt, IT associate director.
The money comes from the E-Tech budget, which comes from student fees paid for with tuition. Its purpose is to maintain and improve student technology around campus, according to Joann Ashlock , the director of student activities and programs.
Currently, the E-Tech budget committee plans to put two signs in Parks Building, and one in Gray Wolf, Jackson, White Horse, and Shuksan Halls. They will be 42 inches according to Wyatt.
Some senators, like Alexander Stevens and Aurora Pedrola, raised concerns that vandalism could make the maintenance of these signs more costly. "What's to stop someone from going up and spray painting these signs if they really wanted to?" said Pedrola.
The E-Tech committee plans to place the signs in places where it would be more difficult to vandalize them, said Sarah Sandford, ASB president.
There is also a warranty on all of the monitors in case any vandals break any of them, said Wyatt.
