EvCC provides resources through their satellite campus in Monroe for those that otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend college.
The Monroe division of EvCC offers transfer degrees and adult education classes, as well as running the tech prep program. Tech prep is a dual-credit program that allows high school students to earn college credit for classes taken at the high school.
Currently the Monroe campus does not offer daytime classes but they would like to do so according to Shelia Dunn, director of east county tech prep. The Monroe classes are housed in public schools in Monroe.
Also Monroe runs Conevyt, which is a distance learning program that allows students to earn college credit through classes taught in Spanish. This is through an agreement between the Monroe school system, Mexican government and the United States government. Only English and U.S. government must be taught in English. Ninety percent of the students who attend the Monroe campuses are Spanish speaking.
The goal of the Monroe campus is to "recruit and encourage people to go to the Everett campus," Dunn said. "There is a misconception that we are competing against Everett. That is not so."
The Monroe campus is serving those people who don't have the resources to commute to Everett for classes. Students come from the eastern side of Snohomish: Monroe, Lake Stevens, Granite Falls, Sultan, Gold Bar and some from Woodinville, Duvall and Start Up.
The Monroe campus is competing against Cascadia and Lake Washington technical college for the market in Monroe. Monroe is also hoping to pull more students from the Mill Creek, Maltby, South Snohomish and Bothell areas. The Monroe campus has no direct marketing or advertising budget and all marketing that Monroe does is piggybacked onto marketing campaigns that Everett does. This leaves little room to highlight the programs that are offered and growing in Monroe.
The biggest cost in running the Monroe programs is the instructor's salary. EvCC gets the use of the public school buildings for a nominal cost.
