One of the top scorers from the Everett Trojans basketball team that finished in first place in the NWAACC North Division two years ago has signed a letter of intent to rejoin the team next season.
Dirk Snel missed this season due to personal reasons after being third on the team in scoring with just over 12 points a game off the bench [started one game] and helped the 2007-2008 Trojans to an eighth place finish in the NWAACC tournament.
Although Snel was unavailable for comment, according to Larry Walker and Sue Snow, EvCC athletic directors, Snel went on a mission to Germany because of his Mormon belief which caused him to miss the entire 2008-2009 season.
Everett Community College's Athletic Director and Men's co-head basketball coach Larry Walker said that Snel informed Walker that he would miss this season well in advance.
"He told me when the season was over last year that he wasn't going to be here this year," Walker said. "It was all part of the plan."
Before coming to EvCC, Snel played at Cascade High School in Everett where he made the first team basketball Wesco All-North selection his senior year, while also playing quarterback, punter and defensive back for the Cascade football team where he made the Wesco All-North team for each position as a senior (second team quarterback and defensive back while first team punter).
Snel was especially known for his three-point shots in the 2007-2008 season where he shot 37 percent from beyond the arch (second on team behind Chris Grounds) in his 30 games played for a total of 77 three-pointers.
On what kind of an impact Snel could have on next year's team, Walker said he expects him to produce just like he did as a freshman.
"He had some monster games as a freshman," Walker said. "He was a complete player and a really smart player."
In his first game, he scored 24 points while scoring a season high 30 in the very next game. Snel came close to that total again in a league game scoring 29 while going six of eight from the three-point line.
All the players from the 2007-2008 season have moved on, so Snel will have to try to get back to the NWAACC tournament with an entirely new group of teammates.
