A year's worth of art comes together
Date:
June 5, 2009 (All day)

An annual showcase to EvCC's art students, the Vibrations magazine and website will debut Friday, June 5 during the Art Showcase.

Vibrations is produced solely by students in the Graphic Arts 251 and 252 classes, during winter and spring quarter. "We're making all the decisions," said Renee Nickell the magazine editor for the 2009 issue.

Any student can apply online for their art to be featured in Vibrations; about 70 applications were entered this year but only 30 made it into the publication. Nickell and her 15 classmates are given the responsibility of deciding what goes in, and what does not.

Considering Vibrations to be the "capstone program" for these design students, instructor Terri Scribner said the students must work with a real budget and deadline. During the first quarter of the program each student gets to work on other projects in preparation for the real publication, which is done using the InDesign layout program.

Keeping close to the magazine, the Vibrations 2009 Online site will offer the selected literary pieces with voiceovers done by fellow students. "They did this a year before," said Tamara Smith the webmaster for this year's site.

The published magazine is free and only available while supplies last, so the website must remain an identical copy of the magazine, always accessible online. "This makes all their last minute changes affect us," said Smith.

This year's theme is "art everyday", while the website takes this further by providing a sense of taking an art journey throughout the day. The magazine itself will be able to "stand-up" using its fold, allowing the book to be more usable by people and to better display the art inside.

"This is the 46th issue [of Vibrations]," said instructor Greg Kammer. Originally just a flier for the poetry department back in 1963, the magazine has consistently offered an opportunity for students to publish and be published only now its not done by hand.

Vibrations 2009 will be available in Whitehorse room 354 from 1-5 p.m. during the art showcase on Friday, June 5. Only 300 prints will be given away, so check out the EvCC website for Vibrations 2009 Online to launch that same day.
