This may not be a very exciting film, or a good adventure flick, but it makes for an amusing comedy thanks to Will Ferrell and Danny McBride's hilarious performances.
Brad Silberling directs this re-imagining of the classic TV series with Ferrell as Dr. Rick Marshall, McBride as a redneck survivalist named Will and Anna Friel as Holly, Marshall's research assistant.
The plot is simple enough; it's similar to last summer's "Journey to the Center of the Earth," only not as engaging, or as interesting or adventurous. It also is not very visually appealing considering how large of a literal sandbox the creators and director had to work with.
The very bland and boring environments, primarily concocted as a computer generated universe, could have been interesting if the designers focused on greater detail and digital set design.
However, what it does deliver are laughable moments throughout that mostly makes up for the film's lack of inspiration and poor use of budget.
There isn't much here for kids, despite the trailers that make it look like more of a family adventure film. It's very raunchy, with drug references and lots of crude humor that will surely amuse the older teens, but parents will most likely be up in arms if they view "Land of the Lost" with their children.
Overall the movie works generally well as a comedy, with adventure and storytelling taking a back seat to the humor.
