Dreamliner goes to Charleston

Boeing decided to pick Charleston, South Carolina for the second 787 Dreamliner production plant. According to the Everett Herald, the reasons likely include lower employee costs, tax incentives, and problems with the Machinists Union.

The average Machinist in SC earns about $14 an hour, roughly half of what the average Everett Machinist makes. Furthermore, the South Carolina Legislature passed a $170 million dollar tax incentive on Wednesday October 28th to land the production line.

According to the Everett Herald, the Charleston Boeing plant will get 1,000 direct manufacturing and flight-line jobs, engineering, management and support positions, and over 12,000 total direct and indirect jobs in South Carolina. Charleston will assemble three 787s a month, while Everett will make seven.

Boeing Chief Executive Jim McNerney believed that the 57-day work stoppage last fall damaged Everett's chances of landing the second production plant.

Michael Jackson still thrilling

The movie, "This Is It", the last work of the late Michael Jackson, who passed away on June 26th is gaining worldwide attention with the recent opening on Tuesday October 27th in the U.S., and around the world. According to the Assoiciated Press, fans world wide applauded the movie as if they were at a concert as Jackson, 50 at the time of production, kept up with his backup dancers.

The film was largely shot in Los Angeles as Jackson prepared to launch a marathon concert tour worldwide. The movie includes performances of hits such as "Thriller," "Billie Jean," "Beat It," "Human Nature" and many more. Performances in the movie also include a rendition of five hits from the Jackson 5.

Verizon enters the playing field

Also in technology news Verizon's Google-powered phone is going on sale in early November for $200, another competitor to the iPhone from AT&T, the Samsung Instinct and the G1 offered by T-Mobile. Verizon pointed out the iPhone's lack of a physical keyboard, and the inability to run several applications at once. Verizon is targeting 15 to 35 year olds primarily, the age group most likely to use mobile gadgets for social networking and blogging. The phone will go on sale for $199.99 after a rebate and requires a two year contract to activate the service with Verizon.
