The children on campus policy requires that any child under the age of 18, excluding registered students, remain out of classrooms with the exception of early childhood education classes. Outside of classes, children are required to be accompanied by an adult.
"The policy will be enforced to protect the learning environment of students." said Patrick Sisneros, vice president of College Services.
Though it has been enacted to safeguard the campus' educational and professional environment, visitor policy poses a potential problem for student parents.
"It's hard being a mom and going back to school," said Raffi Wyllie, student and mother to 8 month old Aiyanna.
Though EvCC offers on campus childcare, age and price restraints have prevented some parents from eligibility.
EvCC offers campus childcare, a service which is not available at many other universities and colleges, according to Sisneros. The service, however, has certain age and price constraints preventing some parents from eligibility.
Pamela Kearsley is a parent and student at EvCC. This Oct., her son Quinton, age 8, was unable to go to school. Kearsly had an important group test in one of her classes, and was unable to find a babysitter. She made arrangements with her instructor to bring Quinton into class, where he was to sit at a table while the students completed their test. Quinton remained quiet and well behaved throughout the period. The instructor, Margaret "Peg" Balachowski, confirmed that child did not cause a distraction during the test.
"I would have left immediately if he was having difficulty being quiet." Kearsley said. "I am aware that it can be disruptive to college students to have a child in class, but in an emergency and if the child is well behaved and quiet, then sometimes it is less stressful for a parent, who is also trying to finish school, to be able to bring their child with them on the rare occasion."
The new policy will prevent these events from occurring in the future.
"In any circumstance, the policy must be enforced," said Sisneros, "We can not make exceptions."
