Sounder fans pack Qwest for MLS Cup
Date:
December 4, 2009 (All day)

David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando were just some of the players on hand as Seattle hosted Major League Soccer's biggest game on Nov.22: MLS Cup 2009.

The cup featured both the LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake as they battled for this year's title.

With the success of the Seattle Sounders FC, selling over 22,000 season tickets, the MLS announced in March that Qwest Field would be the host site for US soccer's biggest game.

Sounders season tickets also included a ticket to the cup, so a majority of Qwest was decked out in rave green, even though the Sounders didn't make it to the cup.

Penalty kicks ended up deciding the match, after the two teams remained tied after two 15 minute overtime sessions. Real Salt Lake ended up prevailing and beat LA 5-4 on penalty kicks.

The Galaxy got off to an early 1-0 lead when Mike Magee found the back of the net in minute 41 from two of the game's biggest stars: David Beckham and Landon Donovan. Salt Lake countered back when Robbie Findley made and unassisted goal to equalize the score at 1-1.

The Sounder faithful were mostly neutral spectators until a group of LA supporters began to get into a squabble with Sounder supporters. At that point, nearly every fan in the stadium was pulling for Salt Lake if they weren't already.

LA started the penalty kicks out with a David Beckham goal, but the teams were even at 4-4 after five kicks each.

RSL supporters hung a sign in the upper bowl of Qwest that read "Rimando saves," and that sign spoke the truth.

For the Galaxy's sixth kick, Rimando saved Edson Buddle's shot, and Robbie Russell converted the game-winner past LA backup keeper Josh Saunders to give RSL their first MLS Cup in team history.

Rimando was named MVP of the match for his work.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber has yet to announce the site of MLS Cup 2010, noting he's not sure if he'll continue with a neutral field, or award the higher seeded club the honor of hosting the match for a true home field advantage.
