Trojans pick up the pace for '10

December 4, 2009 (All day)

The 2009-2010 Everett Community College women's basketball team is looking to get back into championship form.

The Trojans, who were the NWAACC Northern Region champions in both 2006-2007 and 2007-2008, will try and improve upon last season's 9-17 record, including an 8-8 record in league play.

With only five active players returning form last year's squad, the Trojans will use a lot of new faces in their quest for a third NWAACC regional title in the past four seasons.

Everett will get its chance to get the 09-10 season off to a good start when they open their season on Saturday Dec. 5 at the Community Colleges of Spokane Tournament in Spokane.

Although undersized, Everett boasts no players taller than six feet, the Trojans will play to their strengths this season. One of those strengths will be to run a fast paced up-tempo style of play to wear down the competition.

"Our biggest strength is that we're quicker (than most teams)," sophomore Captain Ashley Housden said. "We should get a lot of points off fast breaks," added fellow Captain Karissa Tri.

The Trojans will also use the other strengths of their game, shooting and tough defense to try and pull off some wins.

"We have a good shooting team," said Housden. "We're good inside and out."

Defense will again be a focal point for this year's Trojans team that comes off a year in which they allowed just over 60 points a game.

"(It's) hard for other teams to set up plays," Tri said about their defensive play. More importantly, this team believes in team play over individual accolades.

"We're unselfish," said sophomore Captain Morgan Thomas. "We just want to win."

The Trojans host Skagit Valley CC on Jan. 2.
